Orconectes (Faxonus) limosus (Rafinesque, 1817)

This is a stream dwelling crayfish of the Atlantic coast that is found on the coastal plain and the piedmont plateau. Unlike all other West Virginia stream dwelling crayfishes, this species prefers silty stream substrates. I have only caught this species where silt is present. This species has a very limited distribution in West Virginia, being found only in the extreme eastern portion of the eastern panhandle in the Potomac River basin.
